Girl: “I want to dress like a boy. I don’t like skirts.”Older sister: “No you don’t. You want to dress pretty, like a girl.”
“No, I like boy colors more!”
“You can wear girl clothes with boy colors, then.”
“…But what if I want to BE a boy!”
“Ew no! That’s stupid. You want to be a girl.”
“No I don’t.”
“Stop that. Yes you do.”
We happened to leave the fitting rooms at the same time and her sister left her alone for a bit. I went up to her and said, “Hey was that you I heard, saying you like boys clothes?” She nodded and said, “Yeah…” looking almost ashamed.
I gestured to myself—today I was wearing some dark bermuda shorts and a worn yellow tank with a striped collard shirt, not looking very girly at all. My hair is short anyways but I have it pinned up in a bun and I’m wearing dogtags and avengers wristbands. I said, “Hey, I dress like a guy a lot and it’s totally okay to do so. And you know what? If you want to be a boy, that’s fine too. You are awesome.”
And I gave her a high five and told her that it’s not wrong to want to dress like a boy or be a boy before going back to help my mom with her shopping.
That was my day!
